Week Nineteen: The Unexpected Answer

Week Eighteen: The Unexpected Answer

Passage: Mark 10:1-12

Summary:

The Pharisees are trying to trap Jesus by getting him either to disagree with the Torah or to publicly defame Herod Antipas’ marriage to Herodias. They also preferred a liberal view on divorce, which is interesting as they seem more closed handed on the other laws they seem to be able to keep. In this case, the liberal view would serve their interests not a wife’s. Jesus shows that the provision for divorce by Moses was meant to limit a problem, not license a practice. Jesus upholds the purpose and intent of marriage by restating God’s pre-Fall plan – man and woman as equal image bearers becoming one flesh for life, not to be separated. Jesus calls men and women to faithful love that resembles God’s love in marriage.

His law is love.
