Week Twenty-Three: The Unexpected Authority

Passage: Mark 11:27-12:12

Summary:

The spiritual leaders question Jesus asking him by what authority he is doing the things he does. In typical Rabbinical fashion Jesus returns with a question to reveal what they believe about the authority by which John baptized. If they affirm John’s baptism is from God, they must affirm Jesus’ authority is from God. If they reject it, they will face the people who believe it was from God. So, they refuse to answer. This is an important issue for us today as many struggle with the question of authority, especially God’s authority. Many want to reject God’s word and God’s work because they would prefer sitting in judgment over God instead of in submission to God. Jesus continues in telling a parable of land leased to rebellious tenants who fail to give the fruit of the land to the owner. The tenants are a picture of the Spiritual Leaders who are fruitless and reject the prophets who call them to repentance. Ultimately, the tenants reject the land owner’s son and kill him just as the religious leaders will reject and kill Jesus the Son of God.

The Son is sent with God’s authority to save
