Our Wounds Are His Way In

March 15, 2020 Preacher: Donald Zimmerman Series: JOHN: Witness to the Light

Passage: John 4:4–4:15, John 4:25–4:26

This week we'll learn how Jesus wants us to bring our wounds to Him.

In today's passage, Jesus intentionally encounters a Samaritan woman who is considered an outsider and an outcast because of her gender, her culture, and her morality. She wants to hide her past, and keep her wounds out of view, but Jesus wants her wounds to be His way in to her life. He can give her living water that will not only satisfy what she has been looking for, but it will become in her a spiritual spring welling up to eternal life.

Today our church gathers across the Puget Sound. We pray for the continued healing and care for all those affected by the outbreak, for peace to come to those filled with anxiety and fear, and for God to use His church to be a burning light of hope and sacrificial love to the world around us.

(read this aloud together as a prayer over yourselves)
4Some wandered in desert wastes,
    finding no way to a city to dwell in;
hungry and thirsty,
    their soul fainted within them.
Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,
and he delivered them from their distress.
He led them by a straight way
till they reached a city to dwell in.
Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love,
for his wondrous works to the children of man!
For he satisfies the longing soul,
and the hungry soul he fills with good things.

Psalm 107:4-9

Have someone pray this prayer over your group:
Jesus, thank you for knowing the depths of our souls. You know our greatest needs and our inmost desires. Forgive us Lord for looking to other things, even when we know that true satisfaction comes from you. We come to you today in worship because you show us we are fully loved and known even though we sin against you. Despite the unknowns the last few weeks have brought, you hold our fear and give us hope. We worship you because even though the circumstances around us change and challenges arise, you Lord stay the same and continue to meet us. Satisfy us today, Lord. Thank you that we have access to you, the living God.

I raise a hallelujah in the presence of my enemies
I raise a hallelujah louder than the unbelief
I raise a hallelujah my weapon is a melody
I raise a hallelujah Heaven comes to fight for me

I'm gonna sing in the middle of the storm
Louder and louder You're gonna hear my praises roar
Up from the ashes hope will arise
Death is defeated the King is alive

I raise a hallelujah with everything inside of me
I raise a hallelujah I will watch the darkness flee
I raise a hallelujah in the middle of the mystery
I raise a hallelujah fear you lost your hold on me

Sing a little louder (in the presence of my enemies)
Sing a little louder (louder than the unbelief)
Sing a little louder (my weapon is a melody)
Sing a little louder (Heaven comes to fight for me)

ASL Version:

Take a few minutes of silence. Allow your own thoughts to quiet and be still. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal what you put your hope in. What is the "husband" that Jesus is telling you to go fetch? What's the 5% in your life that you haven't given to Jesus?

Share what you sense the Spirit saying with those around you. Take a moment to pray over each other and affirm the Spirit's work. Then sing together the songs below.

Our Father who in heaven reigns
How great and mighty is Your name
Your kingdom come, Your will be done
Now here on earth as is above

O give to us our daily bread
And keep our hungry spirits fed
May all our satisfaction be
In You whose grace has set us free

Give us hope, give us faith, help us trust in your guidance
From the depths of Your grace, You have richly provided
Thank you, thank you, Father You are all we need
Father You are all we need

Forigve us all our trespasses
As we forgive when sinned against
Though evil seeks to hide Your face
We fix our eyes on You by faith

We lift You high above all names
Your kingdom will forever reign
To You the glory and the power forevermore

I want to learn to walk and follow all your ways
Your word is like a shining guide through dying days
My heart is so deceitful lying to my face
Tells me all the things I want besides your saving grace

Oh I need you, Lord I need you
The one who calmed the storms
To calm the storms in me
Oh I need you, Lord I need you
The one who is the light
To light the dark in me

I taste a hint of death on every single breath
And I shuffle tired feet with every single step
I'll trust in you, your word, your life, your promises
My glory and the lifter of my head

Irrevocable and strong
Are your covenants oh God
And the love that you have shown
Is the only hope I own
Set my gaze upon the cross
And rejoice at satan's loss
For my victory is won by my Savior, God the Son

There is no other, so sure and steady
My hope is held in Your hand
When castles crumble and breath is fleeting
Upon this rock I will stand
Upon this rock I will stand

Glory, glory, we have no other king
But Jesus Lord of all
We raise the anthem, our loudest praises ring
We crown Him Lord of all

Your kindly rule has shattered and broken
The curse of sin's tyranny
My life is hidden 'neath heaven's shadow
Your crimson flood covers me
Your crimson flood covers me

In all my sorrows, Jesus is better
Make my heart believe
In every vict'ry, Jesus is better
Make my heart believe
Than any comfort, Jesus is better
Make my heart believe
More than all riches, Jesus is better
Make my heart believe
Our souls declaring: Jesus is better
Make my heart believe
Our song eternal: Jesus is better
Make my heart believe

As we gather in our homes across our regions today, rejoice in the fact that we know the One who is in control. Rest because nothing is a surprise to our God. Have peace because we can trust in His plans.

41 And many more believed because of his word.
42 They said to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is indeed the Savior of the world.”
John 4:41-21
