The Power of His Word

March 22, 2020 Preacher: Jeff Vanderstelt Series: JOHN: Witness to the Light

Passage: John 4:43–4:54

This week we'll see how Jesus uses his words to rebuke, redirect, and redeem.

In today's passage, Jesus encounters a noble official who is begging Jesus to come and heal his ill son. Jesus denies the man's request and says to him, "Go; your son will live" (John 4:50). The man believed and trusted the words that Jesus spoke and went on his way. Jesus didn't give a sign or perform a miracle. All He gave was His word

Sometimes the worst of times become the best of times because they lead us to the end of ourselves and the beginning of turning to God in faith. Trusting in the words that He speaks. By not answering this man's initial request, Jesus elevated his faith because he learned he could trust in His word. In the end, Jesus didn't give him what he wanted, but gave him what he needed

Today our church continues to gather across Puget Sound in our homes. We pray for the continued healing and care for all those affected by the outbreak, for peace to come to those filled with anxiety and fear, and for God to use His church to be a burning light of hope and sacrificial love to the world around us. As we begin this liturgy, let us come to God with hearts of worship; for in the times we are facing, He continues to be faithful in providing our every need.

(pick someone to read this out loud)
For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence,
    for my hope is from him.
He only is my rock and my salvation,
    my fortress; I shall not be shaken.
On God rests my salvation and my glory;
    my mighty rock, my refuge is God.
Trust in him at all times, O people;
    pour out your heart before him;
    God is a refuge for us.
Those of low estate are but a breath;
    those of high estate are a delusion;
    in the balances they go up;
    they are together lighter than a breath.
10 Put no trust in extortion;
    set no vain hopes on robbery;
    if riches increase, set not your heart on them.
11 Once God has spoken; twice have I heard this:
    that power belongs to God,
12and that to you, O Lord, belongs steadfast love.
    For you will render to a man according to his work.
Psalm 62:5-12

I've heard a thousand stories of what they think you're like
But I've heard the tender whisper of love in the dead of night
And you tell me that you're pleased and that I'm never alone

You're a good good father
It's who you are, it's who you are, it's who you are
And I'm loved by you
It's who I am, it's who I am, it's who I am

I've seen many searching for answers far and wide
But I know we're all searching for answers only you provide
'Cause you know just what we need before we say a word

You are perfect in all of your ways
You are perfect in all of your ways
You are perfect in all of your ways to us

Love so undeniable I can hardly speak
Peace so unexplainable I can hardly think
As you call me deeper still
As you call me deeper still
All you call me deeper still into love, love, love

ASL Version:

Take a few minutes of silence. Allow your own thoughts to quiet and be still. Is there a prayer Jesus has answered very specifically that you have only retold as a story? Confess to Him, then share with those around you so their faith may be built.

Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal where you have not trusted what Jesus has spoken to you. Where is Jesus asking you to exercise your faith in Him and in His word? What is He calling you to do in faith in this season?

Share what you sense the Spirit saying with those around you. Take a moment to pray over each other and affirm the Spirit's work. Then sing together the songs below.

Speak to me when the silence steals my voice
You understand me, You understand me
Come to me in the valley of unknowns
You understand me, You understand me
You understand me, You understand me

So I throw all my cares before you
My doubts and fears don't scare you
You're bigger than I thought you were
You're bigger than I thought
I stop all negotiations with the God of all creation
You're bigger than I thought you were
You're bigger than I thought you were

I believe but help my unbelief
You understand me, You understand me
Help me reach the faith that's underneath
You understand me, You understand me
You understand me, You understand me

I will rest in the Father's hands
Leave the rest in the Father's hands

Worthy of every song we could ever sing
Worthy of all the praise we could ever bring
Worthy of every breath we could ever breathe
We live for you

Jesus, the name above every other name
Jesus, the only one who could ever save
Worthy of every breath we could ever breathe
We live for you

Holy, there is no one like you
There is none beside you
Open up my eyes in wonder
Show me who you are
And fill me with your heart
And lead me in your love to those around me

I will build my life upon your love
It is a firm foundation
I will put my trust in you alone
And I will not be shaken

My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus' blood and righteousness
I dare not trust the sweetest frame
But wholly lean on Jesus' name

When darkness veils my Savior's face
I rest on his unchanging grace
In every high and stormy gale
My anchor holds within the veil

On Christ the solid rock I stand
All other ground is sinking sand
All other ground is sinking sand

His oath, his covenant, his blood
Support me in the whelming flood
When all around my soul gives way
He then is all my hope and stay

When he shall come with trumpet sound
Oh may I then in him be found
Dressed in his righteousness alone
Faultless to stand before the throne

In these coming days, would we see people healed and coming to faith. Would Jesus elevate our own faith and bring revival in our households that pours into the households of our neighbors. Would we give Him all the credit so His glory is revealed. Take a few minutes to pray for these things.

(read this aloud together)
13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
