In Death He Reigns

April 12, 2020 Preacher: Jeff Vanderstelt Series: In Death He Reigns - Holy Week 2020

Passage: John 20:1–20:17

EASTER SUNDAY: This week we'll see how even in death, He reigns!

The purpose of this resource is to help your family, missional community, or a few friends experience many of the elements we do together when we gather in downtown Bellevue.

TIPS:
-Pick someone to do the readings and prayers or take turns.
-Participate in all the elements below. They work together, we promise.
-We recommend turning mobile devices horizontal for use of this liturgy.
-Remove distractions like other devices, pets, noise, etc
-Kids resources for Easter can be found here.

HAPPY EASTER EVERYONE!

Jesus is alive. He rose from the grave. This is the most important day ever! On Friday, Jesus was crucified. On Sunday he rose again from the dead. On Friday, Jesus suffered and died for us. On Sunday he rose victoriously over Satan, sin and death. On Friday, he paid for our sins. On Sunday, he rose again with his resurrected body as the “paid in full” receipt. If he had remained dead, we would all be hopeless. We would all still have to eternally pay for our sins with our own lives. But we are not hopeless. He has risen!

OPENING PRAYER / CALL TO WORSHIP

(Pick one person to lead this, and read the responses aloud as a group.)

Leader: The tomb is empty! The stone has been rolled away!
All: Christ is risen! He is risen, indeed!
Leader: Thanks be to God, who gives us victory through our risen Lord.
All: Victory reigns over death!
Leader: O death, where is your victory?
All: O death, where is your sting?
Leader: Christ is risen!
All: He is risen indeed!
Leader: Come, let us worship and rejoice in the living Christ!

"BIGGER THAN I THOUGHT"

chord2

VERSE 1
Speak to me when the silence steals my voice
You understand me, You understand me
Come to me in the valley of unknowns
You understand me, You understand me
You understand me, You understand me

CHORUS
So I throw all my cares before you
My doubts and fears don't scare you
You're bigger than I thought you were
You're bigger than I thought
I stop all negotiations with the God of all creation
You're bigger than I thought you were
You're bigger than I thought you were

VERSE 2
I believe but help my unbelief
You understand me, You understand me
Help me reach the faith that's underneath
You understand me, You understand me
You understand me, You understand me

BRIDGE
I will rest in the Father's hands
Leave the rest in the Father's hands

"LIVING HOPE"

chord2

VERSE 1
How great the chasm that lay between us
How high the mountain I could not climb
In desperation I turned to Heaven
And spoke Your Name into the night

Then through the darkness
Your loving kindness
Tore through the shadows of my soul
The work is finished, the end is written
Jesus Christ, my living hope

VERSE 2
Who could imagine so great a mercy
What heart could fathom such boundless grace
The God of ages stepped down from glory
To wear my sin and bear my shame

The cross has spoken I am forgiven
The King of kings calls me His own
Beautiful Savior I'm Yours forever
Jesus Christ, my living hope

CHORUS
Hallelujah, praise the One who set me free
Hallelujah, death has lost its grip on me
You have broken every chain
There's salvation in Your Name
Jesus Christ, my living hope

VERSE 3
Then came the morning that sealed the promise
Your buried body began to breathe
Out of the silence, the roaring lion
Declared the grave has no claim on me
Jesus, Yours is the victory

"AIN'T NO GRAVE"

chord2

VERSE 1
Shame is a prison as cruel as a grave
Shame is a robber and he's come to take my name
Love is my redeemer lifting me up from the ground
Love is the power where my freedom song is found

VERSE 2
Fear is a liar with a smooth and velvet tongue
Fear is a tyrant, he's always telling me to run
Love is resurrection and love is a trumpet sound
Love is my weapon, I'm gonna take my giants down

CHORUS
There ain't no grave gonna hold my body down
There ain't no grave gonna hold my body down

VERSE 3
There was a battle, a war between death and life
There on a tree the Lamb of God was crucified
He defeated sin and death, He took back every key
He rose up as a lion and He's setting all the captives free

CHORUS
There ain't no grave gonna hold His body down
There ain't no grave gonna hold His body down

BRIDGE
If You walked out of the grave I'm walkin' too

CHORUS
There ain't no grave gonna hold my body down
There ain't no grave gonna hold my body down
When I hear that trumpet sound
I'm gonna rise up out of the ground
There ain't no grave gonna hold my body down
There ain't no grave gonna hold my body down

TIME OF RESPONSE

Take a few minutes and share where you have seen God redeem your life since last Easter.

Share what you sense the Spirit saying with those around you. Take a moment to pray over each other and rejoice that He is resurrection hope for all of us!

RESPOND BY GIVING

Giving is an act of worship, and right now, giving supports the ways we are recreating ministry for this unique time, and allows us to keep our team intact. Doxa exists to make disciples in the every day stuff of life, and that continues when we are unable to meet together in person. Giving is also an expression of faith that the Father will continue to provide for our every need. We encourage you to stop and thank God for all that He has provided for you in this season, and ask Him what you should give.

BENEDICTION

Suffering doesn't have to end in death. With Jesus, He walks with us through our suffering and brings about new life from death! Only our King can do that! Take a minute to proclaim out loud what He reigns over in your life today (family, future, finances, etc).
He is risen, Church.

(say this aloud together)
He is risen indeed!
